Narayaneeyam - Dasakam 87:The story of Kuchela

Dasakam: 87 -- The Kuchela Episode

Krishna and Kuchela studied together under Sandipani Maharshi in his Ashram when they were boys. Many years passed and Krishna was the King of Dwaraka whereas Kuchela was hardly pulling on as a poor brahmin. One day Kuchela's wife tells Kuchela that there is no food in the house. The children were always hungry. It was Kuchela's desire to meet his friend Krishna. Why does he not go and meet him? Kuchela also wants to go. He considers the unexpected opportunity to meet Krishna as a veritable windfall. Before he sets out for Dwaraka to meet Krishna, He asks his wife for a gift to Krishana. She gives him some rice flakes made from borrowed rice and Kuchela He takes care to carry with him, tucked in a corner of his upper cloth, and starts off to meet Krishna. Even as he wends his way towards Dwaraka, his mind is dominated by thoughts about Krishna. On the way he thinks "Will Krishna recognise me? Will he receive me, a poor brahmin? Krishna is so large hearted he will receive any brahmin, even the poorest of the poor." So thinking he proceeds on foot a distance of maybe a hundred miles.

In due course, he reaches Dwaraka and approaches Krishna's mansion. Krishna is sitting in his house with Rukmini when he sees Kuchela coming. He runs off from his couch and rushes towards Kuchela to embrace him and accord him a rousing reception. He clasps his hand affectionately and leads him inside His palace. He sheds tears of joy. He lovingly seats Kuchela on the couch and honours him by laving his feet, applying sandal paste on his feet, offering flowers at his feet, performing dhupa, deepa, etc.  . and treated well. Finally he asks Kuchela what he has brought and forcibly takes the rice flakes and eats two handfuls of it. But when he was about to eat the third time his wife objects saying that she will become a servant of Kuchela if he eats again. Hence he stops eating. Kuchela pleasantly spent one night in the city of Dwaraka, Kuchela and Krishna talk for some time and it is time for kuchela to go.

So the friends part and Kuchela next day returned back home without taking any money . Thinking of telling his wife, “If I had asked , he sure would have given,”And also getting worried as to what he will tell his wife,And slowly getting his mind drowned in your bewitching smile and acts When he reaches home he finds that many riches have come to his house and he can hardly recognize his house. His wife come s out to greet him with great happiness. And wearing several types of ornaments and jewels. And understood that your mercy is greatly wonderful. Though that Kuchela started living in that gem studded house,His devotion daily increased more and more and he attained salvation.

Narayaneeyam Dasakam :86 The killing of Sala and others and the Maha Bharatha war.

Dasakam: 86 -- The killing of Sala and others andThe Mahabharata War
Lord Krishna later killed king Sala who had obtained magical powers by penance . In the war between Pandavas and Kauravas, he gave his army to Kauravas and he himself became the charioteer of Arjuna. He helped Pandavas win the war in various ways .During Thy stopover in Indraprastha, Thy city, Dwaraka, was invaded by Salva, whoafter tasting defeat by the Yadava army during the wedding of Rukmini, had obtainedfrom Lord Siva, an aerial vehicle by name Saubha, and was also endowed withmagical powers. Pradyumna, with the entire Yadava army, repelled the attack and, inthe ensuing battle that lasted for 27 days, killed his (Salva's) powerful minister Dyuman. Almost immediately you returned back to Dwaraka with Balarama and joined the battle with Salva.,who had almost completely lost his army,And he also using his mace broke your bow which was named Saranga,And not only that he killed before you Vasudeva created by his magical powers,And it seems it made even you confused and jaded for some time,Though Veda Vyasa says nothing like that happened to you.
With your mace you pulverized the plane called Soubha and mixed it in sea,And speedily killed Salya by cutting his neck by your divine wheel Sudarshana, Dantavaktra attacked Thee by hitting violently with his mace. And even this one who was blessed was killed by you using your mace Koumodhaki,
And He was fortunate like Shishupala he also merged with your majesty , indicating the fact,
The incarnation of Krishna was taken so that all these people should get salvation. After Thy return to Dwaarikaa, a fraudulent game of dice took place in the court of the Kouravas. when Draupadi was dragged there by her hair. Piteously and helplessly crying she prayed to Thee. With compassion Thou endowed her with endless length of clothing. Further, when living in the forest, Draupadi was very frightened because sage Durvaasaa had come there with his people when the food was over. you appeared before Draupadi again thought of Thee and Thou came to her rescue and ate a bit of the left over leafy vegetable and thereby satiated fully the hunger of the sage and his disciples.

Soon after, when consultations and preparations for the impending war were underway, granting Arjuna's prayer for Thy assistance, You gave all your army to Duryodhana and also went as an emissary Of Pandavas to Hasthinapura and there you were honoured, By elderly statesmen like Bhishma, Drona and others. but was insulted,By Duryodhana and you revealed your super cosmic form, in that assembly of sages, and, thus, shaking the whole city, return to the Pandavas. Truth, in these words: "O friend, what are you grieving for ? This Soul is Eternal, Onewithout a Second; it has neither birth nor death. That being the Reality, who is theslayer and who is the slain ? Hence, abandoning the notion of your killing yourrelations, and with your mind totally dedicated to me, get up and fight this righteous warand do your duty as a Kshatriya. By saying so and showing him Thy cosmic form, Thou brought Arjuna back to a balanced state of mind.

Bhishma, one of the leading devotees was intent on helping in fulfilling Thy purpose of reducing the burden of the earth, and was killing almost 10,000 warrior’s every day. Arjuna had become very exhausted in resisting Bhishma. Forgetting Thy vow of not taking up arms in the war, Thou rushed towards Bhishma with Thy great discus in hand as though in great anger. Bhishma stood With folded hands and with a bowed head and this, Made you show your joy at him and returned back.,

Possibly to fulfill the vow of Bhishma that, He will force you take up arms during the battle. You saved Arjuna in the battle with Drona by receiving ,The Narayana arrow sent by Bhagadatha riding on an elephant,You punished Jayadradha by hiding the Sun by your sudarshana wheel,Saved Arjuna from Nagasthra sent by Karna , by pushing ,The chariot down and made the arrow take only his crown, , and his head was leftunharmed. What, indeed, hast Thou not done for the Pandavas ?

Just when the war was to begin Balaraama had gone away on a pilgrimage. He first covered the holy area of Naimishaaranya. Then he killed Suta for not having got up to honour him and installed his son in his place. Then he destroyed the Asura Valkala, who used to destroy the Yagnyas carried out on the full moon and new moon days. Completing his pilgrimage he returned to Kurukshetra. There when he saw the prolonged fight between Bheema and Duryodhana, he went away to Thy city of Dwaarika. Drona's son, the evil minded Ashwatthaamaa had killed the sons of Draupadi when they were fast asleep. On your advice,Arjuna approached him and retracted the Brahmaastra discharged by him and clipped off his crest jewel. To cut off the line of the Pandavas,Ashwatthaamaa again sent the weapon into Uttara's womb to kill the foetus in there. To protect the foetus Thou entered her womb in the size of a thumb and protect the foetus withThy Sudarshana discus in hand. Bhishma (who had been vested by his father, Santanu with the power to choose themoment of his death) instructed Yudhishtira in all the Dharmas from his bed of arrows. , Then, he being a very great devotee of yours, Attained instant identity with supreme God due to his great devotion. And later you made Yudhishtra happy by performance of Aswamedha sacrifice,And returned back to Dwaraka.

Saalva of magical merits, who was defeated by the Yaadava army at the time of Rukmini's abduction, got Saubh the aerial car as a boon from Shivaa. When Thou were residing in the city of the Kurus, Indraprastha, Saalva attacked Thy city Dwaarika. Pradyumna resisted him heading the entire army of the Yaadavas, and killed his powerful minister Dyumanta. This battle lasted for 27 days.

Along with Balaraam Thou quickly reached Dwaarika and confronted Saalva the owner of the aerial car Saubha whose army was almost destroyed. He knocked down Thy bow Shaaranga with a stroke of his mace. He even killed the likeness of Thy father which he had created by his magical abilities. Some say that even Thou were for a moment decieved by this illusion. But sage Vyaas has refuted this opinion.

The aerial car Saubha was smashed to pieces with a mace and thrown into the sea, Saalva's head was also cut off by Thy Sudershana discus. Dantavaktra then attacked Thee violently and hit Thee with his mace, thereupon Thou killed him, the repository of good deeds, with Thy mace Kaumodaki. He was fortunate like Shishupal (Chedi) and others who had attained union with Thee. The purpose of this incarnation of Thee was to give liberation to all those who had for long fixed their minds on Thee.

Thou enabled Yudhishthira to perform three great Ashwamedha Yangyas by which all his aspirations were fulfilled. Then Thou returned to Dwaarikaa. O Lord of Guruvaayur! save me from all diseases.

Narayaneeyam - Dasakam 85 Jarasandha and Shishupal Slain

Oh Lord, twenty thousand eight hundred kings, Who were caught and kept and tortured by Jarasandha,Send an emissary to you , who is the only support ,For people without any support and they ,Requested you to completely eliminate Jarasandha. Having decided to wage a war against Jarasandha, Hearing from Narada that Dharmaputhra is planning to have a Rajassoya,You becoming one who was not able to decide on the priority between these two,And when Udhava told that since Rajasooya involved in making, All other kings under you, these two aims can be carried out together, Along with all related people you went to the kingdom of Yudhishtra. When Lord Krishna visited Indra prastha to attend the RajaSooya conducted by Yudhishtra all the Pandavas set out in all the directions to conquer the kings and expand the boundaries of their kingdom.

Warriors like Bheem, Arjun defeated great kings all around and extended the boundaries of Yudhisthir's empire. But to defeat Jarasandh, - Bheema, Arjuna and Lord Krishna went in the guise Brahmins. They reached Jarasandh capital Girivraj and prayed him for donations. Jarasandh promised to give them the things of their desires. Lord Krishna then introduced themselves and begged Jarasandh for a duel with any of them. Jarasandh accepted to fight a duel with Bheema. He gave Bheema a mace and both of them came out to the outskirts of the town, where they began their duel. Both of them were equally strong and equally brave and well pitted.

Twenty-seven days passed, but their duel remained inconclusive. On the twenty-eighth day, during the fight, Lord signaled Bheema a way to kill Jarasandh. He took a small twig in his hands and tore it apart into two. Bheema understood the signal and beating Jarasandh on ground, he tore him apart in two pieces and threw them in opposite directions. Thus came the end of evil Jarasandh. Lord Krishna and Arjuna heartily greeted Bheema for his success. They then enthroned Jarasandh's son Sahdev and also got the captive kings released.

SALVATION OF SHISHUPAL

King Yudhishthir had invited great vedic Brahmins and Acharayas on the occasion. Those great Sages included Ved Vyas, Bhardwaj, Sumantu, Gautam, Asit, Vashishth, Chyvan, Kanv, Maitrey, Kavash, Chit, Vishvamitra, Vamdev, Sumati, Jemini, Kratu, Pail, Parashurama, Shukracharya, Asuri, Vitihotra, Madhuchchanda, Veersen and Akritvarn etc. Persons from Kauravas side like Drona, Bheeshma, Kripacharya, Dhritrashtra, Vidhur and Duryodhan etc. were too invited to witness the celebrations. Even Brahma, Shiv, Indra, Gandharvas, Vidyadhars had too arrived. But before the Yagya could start a dispute cropped up among the great sages as to who ought to be worshipped first in the Yagya.
In the opinion of Sahdeva (youngest of the Pandava brothers, not the son of Jarasandh), Lord Krishna deserved the first worship. Every one supported him. Only Shishupal could not tolerate the decision. He stood up and said: "In the presence of such great ascetics, savants, polymaths and sages, how can this cowherd deserve the first worship." Despite Shishupal bitter remarks Lord Krishna kept quiet. But Shishupal did not. Encouraged by Lord's silence he began to attack the kings, who stood by Lord's side, with sword. He was simultaneously abusing Lord Krishna also. Lord had assured Shishupal of this forgiveness for up to one hundred sins. But now Shishupal's sins have crossed that permitted number. So, quieting all, Lord cut his head with His wheel. As soon as the dead body of Shishupal fell on the ground, a flame emerged from it and merged with Lord Krishna. Shukdev says: "O Parikshit, feelings of hostility had been accumulating in the heart of Shishupal for his past three births against Lord Krishna. It was because of these intense hostile feelings that Shishupal met salvation eventually.

After the salvation of Shishupal, ceremonies and rituals of Yagya proceeded unabated. At the end king Yudhishthir presented all those present there with fitting gifts and tookceremonial bath. At the request of Pandavas, lord Krishna stayed in Indraprastha for many months.Later you helped them complete the Raja suya sacrifice in a fitting manner,And people shouted “Victory to Yudhishtra, Victory to Lord Krishna”, And At the request of Pandavas, lord Krishna stayed in Indraprastha for many months. Then you returned home but the bad Duryodhana , becoming jealous ,Of the great wealth of his enemies stumbled in the assembly hall, Constructed by Maya, becoming confused between, Places filled with flowing water and places of firm ground. When Bheema and Panchali laughed with derision at his confusion, Oh Lord, you encouraged them in so doing by your mischievous glances, And this immediately became the seed that would diminish the burden of earth.

Then eager to attack Jaraasandha, the king of Magadha, Thou were informed by Naarada that Yudhishthira was preparing to perform the Raajasooya Yagna. Thou becoming one who was not able to decide on the priority between these two, Udhdhava pointed that the sacrifice demanded that all the enemies be conquered, so by attending the sacrifice both the purposes will be fulfilled. With Thy followers Thou proceeded to attend the Raajsooya Yagna in Yudhishthiraa's city Indraprastha.

On Thy arrival at Indraprastha with all Thy wives, Yudhishtira, who had become immensely wealthy with the help of his brothers by their increased might due to Thy gracious side glance, Oh Thou who are the servant of Thy devotees was then sent by Yudhishthira to Jaraasandha along with Bheem and Arjuna.

O Lord! Thou three then went to Girivraja the capital of Jaraasandha. In the guise of Braahmins Thou asked for a festival of dual. Jarasandha, who, in his arrogance, was fighting ferociously, was killed by Bhima, byhis body being split vertically down the middle, following a hint from Thee, by the act ofsplitting a twig. Then, Thou didst release the Kings from captivity and, besides, blessing them with joy, The captive kings were then released and Thou happily blessed them with supreme devotion. They were all devoid of all desire, yet Thou engaged them to rule the earth ethically and as per Dharma.

Yudhishthira was then performing the Raajsooya Yagna during which all the kings were joyfully performing the work allotted to them as servants. Thou O Lord of the Universe! Then, in the ceremony of Rajhasuya when Dharmaputhra wanted to perform the first honoured  worship,On the advice of his brother Sahadeva , did the special primary worship to Thee, Who is the soul of soul of all beings living on the universe, with love and devotion, And this made all the universe including men and devas very happy.

Sisupala, King of Chedi, suddenly jumped from his seat, and told,” When so many sages and great kings,Are present here , it is shameful that the prime worship is being offered,To a useless boy who is a cowherd” ' he exclaimed! And lifting his weapons and ran towards you,And due to this the enraged Pandavas rushed at him.

You then prevented people from both sides of any action,And you yourself beheaded the enemy with your holy wheel, Which is normally used to kill your Rakshasa enemies, And that Shishupala , With his mind purified by continuously thinking of Thee with hatred, in three lives (as Hiranyakasipu, Ravan, and, now, Sisupala) he attained that ultimate union with Thee.Which is extremely difficult even for great sages to attain.
